In the behind 1940s and early 1950s MGM made a couple of movies on film biographies on songwriters such as Jerome Kern (Till the Clouds Roll By), Rogers and Hart (Words and Music), fair to name a few. Well Three Microscopic Words is actually about the Tin Pan Alley song-writing team Kalmar and Ruby. Fred Astaire stars as Bert Kalmar and Red Skelton stars as Harry Ruby. Also starring is Vera-Ellen (White Christmas) as Kalmar’s wife and extinct vaudeville partner and Arlene Dahl as Ruby’s wife. Fred Astaire once said this was one of his current movies he made and this a very toothsome film. I highly recommend this movie if you bask in the MGM musicals or if you like Fred Astaire. Fred may not do a lot of dancing in this one but it’s quiet a huge film. Another large thing about this movie is compared to the other film bio-pics on songwriters this one Three Small Words is actually a very upright depiction of the lives of tunesmiths Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby. I heard Harry Ruby had a large deal of input for the making of this film. Anyway seek this movie, the cast, the music and everything else in this movie is mountainous!

This is one of Astaire`s lesser known vehicles, but in my understanding – 1 of his very best. It was his absorb approved movie. He is a delight co-starring with Red Skelton(his intense humorous style is toned down here) and has a incredible chemistry with the broad dancer Vera-Ellen. The film is tubby of superior songs and memorable supporting players including Gloria DeHaven(as her acquire mother Mrs Carter DeHaven), Debbie Reynolds(dubbed by Helen Kane) and Carleton Carpenter. King of the Hill is one of the best T.V. shows around. It is hilarious yet radiant with unforgettable and very believable characters (who doesn’t know someone like the government-hating, paranoid Dale or the self-aggrandizing Peggy? ) . Like the first DVD residence, Season 2 if compiled with a lot of professionalism and care. The extras on these DVDs are very novel and creative. My favorites are the deleted and extended scenes. There is commentary on at least one episode per disc by the characters or the creators that are fascinating and appealing, although the character commentaries are better on the first season disc region. The designers of this place also give the viewer an inside stare at how spirited T.V. shows are made through the “Animation Evolution” featurette which has many options. Other extras include The Arlen School of Drawing tutorial, music inspired by the Hills, and book excerpts from “The Boy Ain’t Suitable.”

Season Two has 22 episodes which include the following: (1) How to Fire a Rifle Without Really Trying: Bobby discovers he excels at shooting but Hank’s traumatic childhood may prevent them from participating in the father-son funshoot; (2) Texas City Twister: One of my favorites. Hank tries to set aside Peggy and Luanne from a twister headed for the Smart Pines trailer park; (3) The Arrowhead: Peggy is intrigued by an archeologist but Hank is suspicious; (4) Hilloween: A fanatic church member tries to kill Halloween in Arlen; (5) Jumpin’ Crack Bass: Hank finds a icy original fishing “bait”; (6) Husky Bobby: Another approved. This one was fraction of that “Who’s going to die? ” cliff hanger.

Great display. It is worth buying the seasons. I savor my collection. I can sight these dvds over and over again without getting sick of them.

The first three seasons of Spongebob were ample. It was an absurd masterpeice of the highest order that made Ren and Stimpy glance like “Washington Week in Review” in comparison. It had comedy that kids could represent to as well as something for us adults, mainly in the characters that resemble people we behold in exact life every day: the eternal optimist (Spongebob), the psychotic best friend (Patrick), the “foreigner” unprejudiced trying to adapt to unusual surroundings (Sandy), the “accomplished neophyte” that lacks any exact skill (Squidward), and the cheapskate (Mr. Krabs) .

Unfortunately, in its fourth season, Spongebob jumps the shark, probably due to the departure of creator and marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg. The cartoon inhabitants of Bikini Bottom have become fair exaggerated caricatures of their past incarnations – they are cartoons of cartoons. The clever dialogue and straightforward storylines of past seasons have been replaced with slap-stick physical comedy and overly complex storylines that are humdrum for children and too inane for adults.

So why, you might ask, am I giving it three stars? Because it smooth has its moments. In particular, I really loved “Patrick Smartpants” which was nothing short of a series classic. Patrick and Sponge Bob are jellyfishing when Patrick runs off a cliff and loses his head, which Sponge Bob (accidentally) replaces with brain coral. Patrick then becomes a genius, discussing classical music with Squidward and complex physics and calculus with Sandy. I also liked the half hour episode, “Have You Seen This Snail? (Where’s Gary? ) ” in which SpongeBob tries to beat a paddle-ball world recount and forgets to feed Gary — for 10 days. Gary runs away to downtown Bikini Bottom where he is taken in by a pleasurable customary woman who indulges him in every intention possible. This is splendid with Gary until he finds out why he is being fattened up, and promptly returns home to a lonely and penitent SpongeBob.

There were other wonderful episodes, but the unpleasant episodes are stunning unpleasant. For example, I found myself unprejudiced dumb bored with “Dunces and Dragons”, in which Spongebob and Patrick accumulate transported to medieval times, and the season openers “Terror of A Krabby Patty” and “Shell of a Man” were so abominable they were objective dull embarrassing to witness. Also, although this explain has always had some tranquil adult humor built into it, mainly in the originate of witty dialogue, the episode “SquidBob TentaclePants” is arrangement too scary for miniature children. Yes! The complete second season of the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon is one of my favorites, with 13 classic episodes from the point to. However, the violence was turned down a bit from the 1st season. The Turtles do not exhaust their weapons that worthy, whereas they often fought with them during season 1. Also, the humor has been upped quite a bit, with some genuine tongue-in-cheek moments(although the unusual amusing did notably have a few as well) . But then again, not to say that was a abominable thing, as that was one of the things that made this series memorable. The season starts off with Shredder’s return, aided by inept inventor Baxter Stockman once more. The next 4 episodes feature a subplot of 3 alien crystals known as the “see of Sarnath.” The Turtles and Shredder speed to procure them each, but the 3 crystals wind up causing all sorts of mayhem, from bringing machines to life to creating insane killer plant monsters, and the Turtles must deal with the havoc. “Case of the Killer Pizzas” is the classic episode with those monster meatballs monsters, and boy are they gruesome. The Turtles have to reluctantly team up with Shredder when the creatures derive too out of hand. Bebop and Rocksteady return in “Enter: The Waft,” when Shredder poisons April, in an attempt to retract the Turtles out when they try to retrieve the antidote. Things go from abominable to worse when Baxter is merged with a sail and attempts to capture both groups out. “Splinter No More,” sees Splinter become Hamato Yoshi again! The Turtles wind up chasing Shredder again, but he leaves a limited trap that ends up turning them against each other! The Neutrinos approach succor in “Teenagers from Dimension X,” and those frogs obtain their first appearance in “Invasion of the Punk Frogs.” “Modern York’s Shiniest” is a hilarious episode in which the Turtles meet a cybernetic cop, REX-1. April gets her genes merged with a cat, “The Flee” style, in “Catwoman From Channel Six.” In that episode, Irma also meets the Turtles for the first time. The final episode is “Return of the Technodrome,” a gargantuan episode in which the Technodrome returns to Earth! These are some reliable episodes, some I haven’t seen in a long time! April 26th is going to be a immense day!

13 episodes on one DVD equals over 3 hours of uninterrupted fun. The quality is aesthetic and all that blah blah blah. No extras yes but who cares!? I want the vintage episodes (which is exactly what is here!!) and not a bunch of cheesy extras taking up location that may have cost us a few precious chapters. If you are a fan and have been waiting for this release – unprejudiced select it!! You’ll appreciate it!!

This movie is one of the best ever! It ranks fair up there with Office Plot. My wife and I have watched this multiple times and it is aloof humorous every time. If you aren’t too prudish, then you should this very consuming. The embarrassing situations combined with the good amount of sexual humor is perfect. You should give this a try if you haven’t seen it.

Giulietta is a wealthy, mousy Roman housewife who lives on the margins of her believe supposed milieu. Dominated by her ravishing, haughty mother (who can barely tolerate her) and her colossal and glamorous sisters, patronized by her rich ding-a-ling friends mostly because of her sympathetic nature (but secretly held in contempt by them for her lack of beauty), Giulietta hides instead in her perfect house with her servants–the only people she can really call her friends–and in her fantasies of her marriage to her jetsetting husband, who seems never to be around. As Giulietta comes to suspect what everyone else has known for years–that he is cheating in her–she simultaneously begins to be visited by spirits who seem to have something to say her. But as she learns more of her husband’s infidelities, and comes to request the emptiness of her acquire life, Giulietta’s spirits seem less like exact supernatural presences and more like manifestations of a descent into madness.

This is by no means Fellini’s “best” film, but it is the one most people mediate of when they exercise the adjective “Felliniesque.” The fantasy sequences, the striking exercise of color (particularly orange–this was his first color film, and he really went to town), the decadent Sixties fashions, and the aesthetic stauesque women who seem to have invaded from outer space: they’re all here, and many of the sequences in this film have been parodied again and again. Its imitations approach for a grand reason: the film is utterly absolutely unforgettable. There are sequences in it that are as splendid or as memorable as anything Fellini has ever done–particularly the immense lawn party sequence, where Giulietta finally breaks down.

There are many things obnoxious with the film: the script doesn’t create a whole lot of sense at times, and the fantasy sequences seem less like something Giulietta would imagine and more like Fellini’s usual obsessions (statuesque women, the circus, etc.) . And as superbly chilly as Caterina Boratto is as Giulietta’s mother (“Nice kimono,” she sneers at her daughter at the lawn party), did he really have to cast actresses twice as vast as his Giulietta to be her mother and sisters? (Even if we are to net that most of the movie is from her point of plan, it mild stretches plan.) What makes it all work so brilliantly in the slay, though, is the director’s sense of filmic fable drive (beautifully orchestrated to Nino Rota’s noted earn) and the performance of the lead actress, Giulietta Masina, who makes it all really matter. Although Masina has not been as praised for this role as great as for her work in CABIRIA and LA STRADA, her work here is every bit as beautiful, and perhaps better for its greater subtlety. Sight her expression the first time she sees one of her visions after she closes her eyes on the beach–or her amazing range in the lawn party sequence as she segues from forced cheerfulness to affirm helplessness to rage, and then finally to despair. (When she finally loses it at her guests and screams at them, it’s hard to say what is more memorable: her moment of fury or her terrifyingly lost expression when she realizes they haven’t even noticed) . Although you really should recognize this on the immense hide (and on as distinct a print as possible), this is a film every student of film should gape.

The film was generally panned when it was first released, and you can aloof seek why. It doesn’t live up to the standards Fellini situation earlier with his early masterpieces “La Strada” and “Nights of Cabiria” or his later international hits “8 1/2″ and “La Dolce Vita.” The visuals are almost hallucinatory, but the epic of a repressed middle-aged woman (played by the improbable Mrs. Fellini, Giulietta Masina) coming to grips with her husband’s infidelity and her enjoy childhood demons is woefully underdeveloped and gives Masina very miniature to do–other than rely on trademark twitches and unfamiliar costumes. Quiet, some of the fantasies are mindboggling and incredibly creative. (Ever since I first saw this film, I’ve wanted to visit a treehouse like the one Juliet’s neighbor takes her to.) And I’m particularly fond of the hoards of faceless nuns forcing school-girl Juliet to act out the martyrdom of some saint on a grill–from which her eccentric grandfather rescues his “limited Bifsteak.” Sandra Milo is a vision and fantasy come-true as Suzi, one of the spirits who leads Juliet to eventually free herself. Some of the sixties touches gain for fun nostalgia now–like the twisting twins on the beach and Juliet’s family’s psychodelic couture. Regretfully the film never quite achieves its potential, but it’s calm well worth a spy. Any Fellini movie scored by the astonishing Nino Rota is worth watching for the music alone. (A previous post claims this to be Giulietta Masina’s “swan song.” Nope…she later co-starred in Fellini’s disappointing “Ginger & Fred.”) Regarding the pre-”Criterion Collection” DVD release; it would have been nice to have a fuller restoration, and this film especially seems ripe for including lots of additional extras that aren’t there. I study forward to the original Criterion Collection release!

Volume 2 in Fox’s Charlie Chan DVD Collection seems not to have been released as remarkable as it escaped. Volume 1 was widely heralded but this installment, which contains the best of the films when the series reached its peak, sort of snuck up on us. Frankly, I can’t occupy I’m the first one here to review it.

Full disclosure: I hold Volume 1 and unprejudiced purchased Volume 2 through Amazon. So my review at this point is based on my (repeated) TV viewings dating serve to the mid 1960s through unprejudiced a few years ago before the Fox Movie Channel banned the CC films. I noticed that Fox skipped one film in this region, CHARLIE CHAN’S SECRET (1936) that preceeded the four films in Volume 2. Why? I can only guess except that SECRET is a precise letdown compared to the quality of the films before it – CHARLIE CHAN IN… LONDON, PARIS, EGYPT, and SHANGHAI. And the films that followed that are represented in Volume 2. But aloof why was it dropped? I guess that’s Fox’s secret.

As with Volume 1, Warner Oland simply IS Charlie Chan. Oland continues to play Chan with his usual unexcited authority and magnificent charisma. Although he was not Asian (athough he believed his mother was share Mongolian), his winning characterization of Chan forever changed the design Asians would be portrayed in Hollywood films.

As for the Fab Four in this set: CC AT THE CIRCUS is the closest Charlie came to film noir, thanks to German director Harry Lachman. His films tended to be dusky and changeable and CIRCUS is no exception. Worthy of the film takes situation at night and even indoor scenes have a sombre edge to them. Lachman would whine a few more Chans in the Sidney Toler era during the early 40s when the series changed direction and became compact shrimp assassinate mysteries such as Slow MEN Content (1941) . These later Chans are delightful on their bear terms but totally different in style from the Olands of the mid-30s. CIRCUS features the entire CHAN clan including his wife. Mystery-wise, if you can’t area the loyal killer in CIRCUS, you should resign your membership in the Charlie Chan club! I mediate even Charlie knows early on but has nothing to pin on the culprit.

CHARLIE CHAN AT THE Accelerate TRACK marks a true jazzing up of the series stylistically. Director Bruce Humberstone, who was ambitious for more vital projects at Fox, wanted to prove Zanuck what he could do and pulled out all the stops in Rush TRACK. Just from the opening music gradual the main credits, you know this one is different. The pacing is faster and optical wipes give each scene a sense of urgency. Charlie’s relationship with son Lee also progresses with Lee being given increasingly valuable assignments by his Pop.

Unlike the earlier drawing room style of the films, in Speed TRACK Charlie takes on a whole gambling syndicate in addition to the murders in a wide ranging series of locales from Honolulu, to Melbourne, to Los Angeles, plus an ocean voyage in between. He’s shot too! High tech is employed here as Chan learns about the “current” map of timing the races with photo-electric cells and photographing the photo enact. What I particularly like in Run TRACK is that the film “language” gives an alert viewer a substantial clue at one point to keep you on the track of the killer. Even at the climax, the killer slips up but nobody notices (momentarily), giving the viewer another chance to solve this one.

AT THE OPERA is generally considered to be the best of the Chans and its reputation is well deserved. Oland for once is co-starred, with Boris Karloff, and the two work well together although they only fragment one scene. The film might more accurately be titled CHARLIE CHAN MEETS THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA because that really describes the storyline. Since Karloff is so obviously the killer you impartial know somebody else has to be doing the dirty work and making it peer like Karloff’s to blame. But Charlie ain’t fooled (nor are we because this is supposed to be a kill MYSTERY) . High tech again is feeble to back solve the mystery as we (and Charlie) are treated to a demonstration of the process enthusiastic in wire photos.

Son Lee again proves indispensible and Director Humberstone delivers the goods once again. A special faux-opera was written for the film by Oscar Levant called “Carnival” and I disfavor to admit it but I wish Levant had turned it into a dependable stout length work – the music is that pleasurable. I don’t know who sang for Karloff but in case viewers wonder how his character could manage to converse so well after being a patient in an insane asylum for ten years, the opening scene shows him practicing every night. A bigoted detective comically played by William Demerest finally has to admit that “Charlie is OK” at the waste. A staunch gem of a film.

The last one in this place, 1937’s CHARLIE CHAN AT THE OLYMPICS (honest treasure that title!), is the most globe-trotting of all the Chans and the most ambitious production-wise. The film starts with Oland in his undershirt jogging in residence! The, uh, partial nudity shows that Oland had lost weight around his mid-section when compared with his appearance circa 1934-35. The film starts in Honolulu and has a scene eirily prophetic of the Pacific sea search for Amelia Earhart’s lost plane that took region a few months after the film’s release. Then Chan is off to intercept the ocean liner Manhattan that is in mid-Atlantic on its blueprint to the Olympic games in Germany (son Lee is on the U.S. swimming team in case you’re wondering how he gets worked into the narrative) . Being 1936, the only device Charlie can gather the ship is to skim from Hawaii to L.A., then grab a transcontinental plane to Novel York, then grab the ill-fated German zepplin Hindenburg from Lake Hurst, NJ. And travelers today deem they have it rough!

The dwelling actually has nothing to do with the Olympics but the film is so animated, who really cares? The games are outmoded as a backdrop for meetings by the spies with Chan, and there is some footage of the events including Jesse Owens’s spectacular hurry for a gold medal. High tech is employed once more as Charlie pulls a exact switcheroo by substituting a radio transmitter in the aircraft diagram the spies are after. Son Lee is kidnapped from outside the Olympic Stadium, and even Charlie thinks he has met his match.

Actor C. Henry Gordon, an alumnus from earlier Chans, almost steals the film as a most trim villian. Things are so uncertain for Charlie that Mr. Gordon, one of the silver screen’s silkiest villians, actually saves Chan from death TWICE, and Gordon is one of the dreadful guys! As in OPERA, the killer is well hidden although the series of clues that Chan puts together to unmask the culprit at the finale is less than convincing. It doesn’t matter because the killer can’t define away a simple clue: spilt ink on his shoe and that seals his fate (no, not a spoiler – by the time the ink-on-shoe comes up, the killer is already unmasked – I unprejudiced consider it’s the best clue!) .

By the time OLYMPICS was made, Warner Oland was really “into” the Chan character so mighty so that he continued speaking like Chan offscreen and even signed his name, “Charlie Chan.” As one interviewrer wrote in mid-1937, “I came to interview Warner Oland about Charlie Chan but ended up interviewing Charlie Chan about Warner Oland.” So what was going on? I’m terrified that’s a sage to be told in Volume 3. I only hope that the Fox people lift this DVD project seriously enough to scour their vaults for ANY materials – film footage but most likely photos – from Oland’s final and uncompleted film, CHARLIE CHAN AT THE RINGSIDE, that he worked on during the first week of January 1938.

Many critics feel the Charlie Chan films did not truly hit their paddle until 1936 and 1937, when the release of four particularly appealing titles dwelling a recent standard for the series. THE CHARLIE CHAN COLLECTION, VOL. 2 not only presents those four films, it restores them as well; after years of neglect, Warner Oland, Keye Luke, and company spy better than ever.

Charlie was recent created by novelist Earl Derr Biggers (1884-1933), who very loosely based the character on Hawaii’s legendary police officer Chang Apana (1887-1933.) Biggers wrote six novels in all, and after several unfounded starts 20th Century Fox (then simply known as Fox) hit on the correct combination of actors, mystery, and comedy, and the result was perhaps the single most favorite film series Hollywood ever created. Although contemporary audiences tend to idea the films as politically wrong, the fact remains that Chan and his family–most often personified by Keye Luke as son Jimmy–were among the very few clear Asian characters on American movie screens at the time; as such they were particularly common with Asian-American audiences of the day.

The four Chan films in this collection are actually the 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th releases in the series, all starring Warner Oland as Chan, all featuring Keye Luke as son Jimmy Chan, and all but one directed by the noble and exacting H. Bruce Humberstone. The most illustrious title is CHARLIE CHAN AT THE OPERA, which co-stars Oland with Boris Karloff in what many judge to be the single finest film in the series. Featuring an operatic derive written by Oscar Levant, the narrative finds Chan called upon to protect diva Lilli Rochelle (Margaret Irving), who has received a death threat. It soon transpires, however, that Madame Rochelle is no blushing innocent: she has a past that includes “an escaped maniac” in the earn of Boris Karloff, and no sooner does the overture start than destroy is afoot. The film is unexpectedly stylish; the distinguished cast includes William Demarest and Nedda Harrigan; and the script very distinctly works to undercut racist notions of the day, with Demarest at first offensively derrisive but ultimately impressed with Chan’s skill.

Although not as highly budgeted as OPERA, AT THE Rush TRACK and AT THE OLYMPICS also maintain Humberstone’s obvious touch. Urge TRACK finds Chan matching wits with a gambling ring positive to turn otherwise unprejudiced horse races to their advantage. John Henry Allen’s portrayal of “Streamline,” a Stepin Fetchit-like character, is perhaps most charitably viewed as a measure of how far African-American actors have advance since the 1930s; this aside, however, the cast is solid and the myth keen. AT THE OLYMPICS is remarkably disconcerting from a historic point of concept. Opening in Hawaii and making references to Pearl Harbor, the film concerns the theft of an aircraft plot which has military application. Chan is soon on his contrivance to Berlin via The Hindenberg, no less, and finds himself confronting a host of spies and counterspies at the 1936 Olympics. Interestingly, the film makers work hard to avoid mention of the Nazis; although stock footage abounds–including footage of Jessie Owens–the inevitable swatiskas are kept out of focus or more obviously simply blotted out.

While the three Humberstone films in this position tend to receive the bulk of vital favor, my gain well-liked in this collection is CHARLIE CHAN AT THE CIRCUS. Directed by Harry Lachman, who would go on to notify other Chan films somewhat later, the film is long on charm in its memoir of abolish under the sizable top, complete with sultry trapeze artists (Maxine Reiner), dancing itsy-bitsy people (George and Olive Brasno), slinky contortionists (Shai Jung), and even one of those poor 1930s ape costumes. Chan films seldom inconvenience themselves too grand with site detail, and AT THE CIRCUS is a particularly flyweight entry; even so, it is tremendously laughable, unexpectedly atmospheric, and George and Olive Brasno are standouts among the supporting cast.

The remasters are not flawless, but they are very worthy indeed. I must, however, sound a slightly sour designate re the bonus features, which are intelligent in themselves but which small in comparison with what might have been done if the studio had really attach its heart into it. Collected, the Keye Luke biography is particularly welcome (moderns tend to overlook the truly groundbreaking nature of his career) and the “Charlie Chan at the Movies” featurette is quite nice. Overall, I strongly recommend this collection to Chan fans everywhere.

Though this film deserves a full-blown special edition designed with adults in mind–or at the very least a book detailing its paralyzed production history–the best treatment it’s had to date was the 2004 TMS/Funimation/Our Time Family Entertainment DVD from 2004. That disc has long been out of print and fetching inflated prices via eBay and various Amazon Marketplace sellers.

But now it’s abet. And despite Amazon incorrectly listing the aspect ratio as 1.33:1 and the distributor as Platinum Disc, rest assured that this is EXACTLY the same disc snarl as the 2004 edition: the film is presented in ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN, with 5.1 Surround Sound (plus a basic Stereo option) plus all the extras from the novel release, which are decidedly aimed at children unfortunately. You get: static-screen character profiles; a Slumberland Singalong featuring three songs from the film; a “Fabricate Your Have Royal Scepter” craft project (text frames) and four trailers, one of which is for a computer-animated children’s feature called A WOBOTS CHRISTMAS that looked so horrendously out-of-date even in 2004 that it could only be a Christian film, plus three other trailers for grand better productions: the likewise computer-generated Canadian feature SANTA CLAUS BROTHERS (2001), the flat-animated short NOEL NOEL (also from Canada), and a lengthy site for one of the early ARTHUR DVDs.

As with the Funimation edition, the packaging states the film runs 100 minutes, while the film itself actually runs 95 minutes. No astronomical deal, and at least it’s not the heavily crop version that appeared in the days of VHS.

But the dependable gem here is, as mentioned, the WIDESCREEN presentation of the vastly underrated Diminutive NEMO. If you’re a fan of either American, Disney-style animation, or Japanese, Miyazaki-style anime, you OWE it to yourself to catch up this budget-priced release to discover what you missed.

If you’re looking for excellent extras, your best bet these days is YouTube, where you can obtain several “Making of” features from around the time of the film’s release (view for these ones: =mhS6jPZvURI , =IJ6f81ZYIfI) as well as Osamu Dezaki’s 1987 pilot anime film (=fCLXfJFOlUY&NR=1) and the rare and challenging Miyazaki test footage (=fnL-6yLzgWA) that never made it to the final production once he left the project.

Fantastic to finally have this film serve on DVD, and at a decent ticket to boot!

Bradbury and Giraud’s influences are distinct. The fable is filled with goodwill and heart without being sentimental or maudlin. Microscopic Nemo breaks a promise and unleashes the Nightmare King’s powers against his friends in Dreamland, and must face his dread to rescue them. The images of Dreamland are breathtaking. The jester-goblins are endearing. Flip’s character is a mischief and has many faults, but not of cynicism. There is no adult subtext, no disparagement or side cracks, no misplaced self-consciousness anywhere in this movie. It would appeal to keen, incandescent, creative children, and it would seize their parents’ interest and treasure too. I hope it is re-released soon.
